Disc brakes are a common solution for e-bikes, but not all e-bike brakes are the same. Coaster brakes are also used in some city and simpler e-bikes. The advantages of disc brakes include good control and effective braking, while coaster brakes are simple in construction and easy to use.
E-bike disc brake – how does it work?
An e-bike disc brake consists of a brake disc (rotor), a brake caliper, brake pads, and a brake lever. The brake disc is attached to the wheel hub, and the brake caliper is located next to the disc. When the brake lever is squeezed, the brake pads press against the disc. Friction slows the rotation of the wheel and brings the bike to a stop.
The advantage of disc brakes is that the braking surface is separate from the rim. Disc brakes can be used as both mechanical and hydraulic systems. The main difference between these is how the brake lever's movement is transmitted to the brake caliper.

Hydraulic disc brake
E-bike hydraulic brakes transmit the force from the brake lever using brake fluid in a sealed hose. When the brake lever is squeezed, the master cylinder creates pressure in the system. This pressure moves the pistons in the brake caliper, which press the brake pads against the disc.
A hydraulic system generally requires less hand force and offers a consistent and easily controllable braking feel. The sealed system is also less susceptible to dirt and moisture than a cable system.
The disadvantages of hydraulic brakes are their higher cost and more complex maintenance. For example, bleeding the system requires the correct tools and the specific fluid for the brake system. However, mechanical disc brakes are not a bad option. A well-adjusted mechanical disc brake can work excellently, for example, in regular city and commuting use.
E-bike brake pads – what's the difference in materials?
E-bike brake pads are consumable parts whose material affects braking feel, wear resistance, and noise, among other things. Common options include organic (resin) and sintered brake pads, and semi-metallic options are also available on the market.
Organic brake pads are primarily made from organic materials combined with synthetic resin. They are usually quiet and offer a pleasant braking feel. However, under heavy use, they may wear faster than sintered pads.
Sintered brake pads are made by sintering powdered materials, typically metals or ceramic materials, together under high pressure and heat. They are generally harder and more durable than organic brake pads, making them suitable for use where brakes require more wear resistance. A disadvantage is that sintered pads can be more prone to squealing, and in some brake systems, they may put more strain on the brake caliper.
When choosing a brake pad, it is important to ensure that the brake pad and brake disc are compatible with each other. Not all brakes are suitable for both types of brake pads. In addition, the brake pad must be the correct model for the specific brake caliper, so a brake pad should not be chosen based solely on its material.
When should e-bike brake pads be replaced?
It is advisable to check brake pad wear regularly. Worn pads can reduce braking efficiency and increase brake disc wear. Especially in an e-bike, the load on the brakes can be significant if the bike is ridden frequently, carries heavy loads, or brakes often on downhills.
Signs of brake pad or brake system maintenance needs include:
- braking power has noticeably decreased
- the brake lever feels unusually soft or vague
- the brakes squeal or grind constantly
- the friction material of the brake pad is very thin
- the brake disc shows unusual wear.
If the hydraulic brake lever feels soft or presses unusually close to the handlebar, the system may need bleeding or other maintenance.

Brake disc size affects brake performance
The diameter of the brake disc affects both braking power and heat management. A larger disc provides more leverage, allowing greater braking force to be achieved with the same brake lever pressure. Additionally, a larger disc helps dissipate the heat generated during braking. This is particularly useful for heavy e-bikes, in hilly terrain, and in situations where brakes are used frequently.
Brake disc sizes vary depending on the bike and brake system. 160, 180, and 203 millimeter discs are common sizes, but the appropriate diameter always depends on the bike's intended use, the brake system, and the manufacturer's recommendations.
However, a larger brake disc should not be installed solely to increase braking power. Before replacing, ensure that the brake disc, brake caliper, mount, and the bike's frame and fork are compatible with each other and that the larger disc is permitted by the manufacturer. A larger disc may also require a suitable adapter for the brake caliper.
Brake maintenance – keep your e-bike brakes in working order
It is advisable to check your e-bike brakes regularly, even if they seem to be working normally. Especially the wear of the brake pads, the cleanliness of the brake disc, and the feel of the brake lever should be checked before longer rides.
- Check brake pads regularly. Replace worn pads in good time.
- Keep brake discs clean. Oil and grease can significantly reduce the friction of the braking surfaces.
- Monitor brake noises. New or continuous squealing, grinding, or rubbing should be investigated.
- Check the feel of the brake lever. The lever should feel firm and not press unusually close to the handlebar.
- Ensure hydraulic brake maintenance. Bleeding and other hydraulic system maintenance procedures should be performed according to the manufacturer's instructions or at a bike service center if necessary.
When cleaning brake discs, it is important to avoid getting oil and other lubricants on the braking surfaces. A dirty or oily brake disc can reduce braking power and cause noise.
